Winter Weather Procedures

It is the firm intention of the staff and governors that the school will remain open whenever possible. In previous years the staff have made a huge effort to ensure that Rickley Park has remained open for business whilst many local schools have closed.  I know this is appreciated by many parents. Of course, if the school is open, it is expected that children will attend (appropriately wrapped up, of course – wellies, warm coats and gloves are essential).

However, if the conditions are so severe and the police are advising against travel, additional significant snow fall is forecast, main roads are impassable (and we will have insufficient staff to open the school) or it is not possible to make the school site safe then it would be necessary to close the school.  This is never an easy decision to make and is always taken after a lot of discussion between the Headteacher & Chair of Governors.

In the very unlikely event of needing to close the school we will use the following ways of communicating with parents:

  • All parents will receive a text message via ParentMailTherefore, it is essential that the school office has your current mobile number – if this has changed over the last few months please ensure that the office have the correct number.
  • We will tweet a message to confirm the school is closed (
  • You can also log onto our school website and click on the ‘news’ section.

If you have checked these and it does not say that the school is closed then please assume that the school is OPEN as normal. There is no need to ring to check!

As the school is an academy (and not a local authority school) information will not appear on the Milton Keynes Council School Closures website.  This is the system that Heart 103.3 and BBC Three Counties radio use to read out school closures – so these announcements will not automatically include academies.

Please also note that:

  • The decision to close the school will be made by 7.45am.
  • If the school is closed, the Rickley Park Nursery and Young Ones will also be closed.
  • When clearing, and salting the site, the priority is the main school entrance. In extreme conditions, the only access to school will be via the main entrance- the gate to Rickley Park will remain locked.
  • Whilst we do grit some key walkways around the school, it is not possible to salt the whole site. Therefore, when it is icy, please assume that any pathway may be slippery and take care.
